PURPOSE: The Dr. Ronald E. McNair Educational (D.R.E.M.E.). STEM Teacher Institute & Youth Camp was established to continue Dr. Ronald McNair’s vision of promoting, supporting and strengthening teaching and learning of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). This vision addresses all, but particularly for teachers who teach the underserved and low income students. The Institute is designed to support teachers and assist them to become more proficient in developing highly effective science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) curriculum to excite and motivate learning, and inspire the inquisitive, innovative and creative spirit within the students that they teach. The Institute will also expose additional STEM career paths for teachers to present as future options for their students. The Teacher Institute aims to provide an empowering educational program designed to enrich teaching of STEM subjects through innovative hands-on experiments, activities, field experiences, education specialists and presenters in the STEM fields. In addition, teachers will be exposed to and obtain STEM materials to use in their regular fall classes.

TEACHER INSTITUTE & YOUTH CAMP DESCRIPTION: The D.R.E.M.E. STEM Institute for teachers is a two-week program which includes 1 week of exclusive teacher training and 1 week instructing and participating in the D.R.E.M.E. Science Youth Camp.  It is for teachers who will be teaching students in the 6th– 12th grades in the fall 2013. The first Institute week is mandatory (July 22nd-26th), followed by a one week youth camp session instructing the youth campers, either July 29th –August. 2 or  August 5th – August 9th, 2013.  Upon selection, all teachers will be notified which week he/she may attend.  Daily Attendance for teachers will begin at 7:30 AM and last until 4:30 PM.

The D.R.E.M.E. STEM Teacher Institute and Youth Camp will explore “Engineering the Future”, through, Energy, Space Exploration, Health and Our Environment by investigating ways to save planet Earth-environment, including recycling. Participants will study air and space transportation, space station, and Mars, as well as nutrition and exercise to maintain a healthy body for their future journey. The curriculum will also be interwoven with topics that enlighten and prepare us for upcoming alternative demands of energy such as – solar, wind, gas and hydro. Additionally, students will investigate the study of oceans and natural water environments and their shorelines particularly relating to the effects of oil exploration on land and off-shore. The increasing usage of robotics in these STEM areas will also be presented. Critical thinking and innovation will be fostered with hands-on activities i.e., creating and racing solar cars, building and launching rockets, and design competitions, as well as various experiments as we journey through the present to engineer the future.
