Dr. Ronald E. McNair Educational Science Literacy Foundation College Scholarship –Information (2012)

The Dr. Ronald E. McNair Educational (DREME) Science Literacy Foundation was founded by friends and family members of Dr. Ronald E. McNair to continue Dr. McNair’s dream of inspiring and motivating the nation’s youth to achieve their goals. After Dr. McNair’s first space mission, he returned to earth excited about achieving another one of his dreams. Dr. McNair felt encouraged and thankful for his accomplishments and wanted others to realize, as he did, the joy and meaning of accomplishing one’s goals. Toward this effort, he visited many schools, universities, and civic organizations across the nation, speaking to many students, hoping to inspire them to dream high, work hard, and accomplish their aims. Dr. McNair achieved a remarkable life and career as a research scientist, pioneering astronaut, role model  and proponent of education. In 1978, he was selected as a member of NASA’s Space Shuttle Program. He first orbited Earth as a Mission Specialist Astronaut in 1984. In 1986, Dr. McNair perished along with six fellow crew members aboard the ill-fated space shuttle Challenger. Dr. McNair was an outstanding leader, teacher, and mentor, who made a life long commitment to inspire and encourage youth to work with “excellence, determination, perseverance, and care for their fellow man.” He also stressed that these ingredients were keys for students to reach success in achieving their goals and dreams. In his memory and honor, the DREME Science Literacy Foundation deems it fitting to award a deserving student an academic scholarship.

This year a scholarship in the amount of $1,500 will be awarded to a graduating senior high school student in the Houston Metropolitan and  surrounding areas. This student must be seeking a degree in the sciences, technology, engineering, and math fields. This scholarship aims to keep Dr. McNair’s legacy alive, by fulfilling his ultimate dream of motivating youth to strive towards success and achievement of their goals.
