PURPOSE: The D.R.E.M.E. Summer Science Youth Academy is a camp for students established to continue Dr. Ronald McNair’s vision of motivating, supporting, and strengthening the learning of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). This vision addresses all youth, particularly the underserved by presenting a learning environment that inspires students to become well-versed and comfortable in the STEM disciplines and seek career paths in the science, technology, engineering, and math related fields. Additionally, the student camp is to provide a motivating and empowering educational program that will enrich learning in these subject areas through exciting and fun hands-on experiments and activities which foster creativity and innovation. The importance of STEM studies will be presented and students will be exposed to various STEM careers via field trips and motivating mentors in various STEM related areas, as presenters. Furthermore, the camp is designed for campers to continually develop skills in problem solving, teamwork, and communication.
CAMP DESCRIPTION: The D.R.E.M.E. Summer Science Youth Academy is a two-week camp program for students entering 9th thru 12th grades, in the fall 2013. Students will attend classes daily from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., Mon.-Fri., July 29th – August 9th, 2013 (*not an overnight or weekend camp). The D.R.E.M.E. Summer Science Camp will explore “Engineering the Future” through, Energy, Space Exploration, Health and Our Environment by investigating ways to save planet Earth-environment, including recycling. Campers will study air and space transportation, space station, and Mars, as well as nutrition and exercise to maintain a healthy body for their future journey. The curriculum will also be interwoven with topics that enlighten and prepare us for upcoming alternative demands of energy such as – solar, wind, gas and hydro. Additionally, students will investigate the study of oceans and natural water environments and their shorelines particularly relating to the effects of oil exploration on land and off-shore. The increasing usage of robotics in these STEM areas will also be explored. Hands-on activities will be a large part of our STEM research and innovations, ie. creating and racing solar cars, building and launching rockets, and design competitions. The camp will include theme related field trips, presentations by NASA, various educators, scientists, engineers, and other professionals as we study the present to innovate for the future.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Entering 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th, grade in the fall of 2013
Interested in Science, Technology, Energy, Math, and Robotics
Science and Math Teacher recommendations
Parent/Guardian must sign application and camp exit assessment
Must attend the entire (2) weeks of camp,
Submit a completed application, including the (3) day Health Education sessions at the University of St. Thomas, students will be transported there from Texas Southern University.
