Division II (High School)
“Influences of Health, Energy, Space Exploration and Our Impact on the Environment” Presented at Texas Southern University
(Camp will be located in the TSU Science Bldg., 2nd Flr., Rm. 204 on 4100 Ennis St., Houston, TX 77004)
PURPOSE: The D.R.E.M.E. Summer Science Camp for students was established to continue Dr. Ronald McNair’s vision of exciting and motivating teachers and students toward studying science, technology, engineering, and math. This vision addresses the underserved, in hopes that they will become well-versed and comfortable in the disciplines to seek out career paths in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The goal of the student camp is to provide a motivating and empowering educational program, which will enrich learning in these subject areas through exciting and fun hands-on experiments, activities, and field experiences. The importance of science, math, and technology will be brought to life. In addition, students will be exposed to motivating mentors in the field and further develop skills in problem solving, teamwork, and communication.
CAMP DESCRIPTION: The D.R.E.M.E. Summer Science Camp for students is a two-week program for students entering 9th thru 12th grades, in the fall 2012. Students will attend classes daily from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. The D.R.E.M.E. Summer Science Camp will explore “Influences of Health, Energy, Space Exploration and Our Impact on the Environment” through investigating ways to save planet Earth as well as to journey in space. Campers will study air and space transportation, including the moon, space station, and Mars as well as other celestial bodies. The curriculum will be interwoven with topics that enlighten and prepare us for future demands of energy such as – solar, wind, gas and hydro. Students will also investigate the theme including the study of oceans and natural water environments and their shorelines particularly relating to the effects of oil exploration on land and off-shore. The curriculum will be interwoven with topics that enlighten and prepare us for future demands of alternative energy such as – solar, wind, and hydro. Students will investigate our environment, “Green Living, and Health Science”- in particular recycling and environmental conservation. Campers will also study the increasing usage of robotics in these areas. Hands-on experiments will also be a part of camp activities and will include solar car races, rocket launches, art activities, field trips, and presentations by NASA, various educators, scientists, engineers, and other professionals.
